Starting out in the uncertain world of freelancing has been a super a daunting time. Focus, time-management and drive are unwieldy beasts, and it’s taken me a good few months to get a good handle on them.
As a way to focus my energy on creating something consistent while I built up a varied portfolio of illustrations, I took a leaf out of Lauren Hom’s proverbial book* and started my own snack-based passion project.
Sweet SP is a growing collection of illustrations inspired by sugar. Taking a break from the drawing table to go and appreciate confectioneries has been a welcome part of my working week (unsurprisingly), and from these excursions I’ve chronicled some of the most mouth-watering treats nearby.
From fanciful French patisseries at Cocorico to giant American style doughnuts at The Early Bird, the dessert game is certainly on the rise in Cardiff if you know where to look. The majority of these hidden gems are tucked away, but their loot is definitely worth discovering.
The perfect combination of master craftsmanship (and it is most definitely a fine art), visual perfection and mind-melting smell and taste combination turns ‘going out for a coffee and a cake’ into something inspiring. I love the amount of effort that goes into creating these mini masterpieces - from being visually pleasing to tasting incredible, they’re such a treat for the senses.
The project has let me marry a love for snacks with my passion for illustration and lettering, while giving me the chance to get my head around layouts, designs, and creating work as a set.
I’m always on the lookout for new places to treat myself at, so let me know of your favorite hot-spots in the comments below (not limited to Cardiff!).

*Lauren Hom is the queen of passion projects. Her work first caught my eye on her blog ‘Will Letter for Lunch’, where she lettered restaurants’ menus in exchange for their finest meals, and her recent self-portrait project ‘Flour Crowns’ shows her in her full, snacky glory.
